As part of the Nevis Landscape Partnership's series of Nevis Faces films, Dave MacLeod followed me out for a night camped on The Devil's Ridge in the Mamores range of mountains. The objective was to see the ridge at dawn from a high camp, and be able to do some sketching in preparation for a larger painting back in the studio. I got a clearing in the clouds in the evening, and managed to paint a nice sunset sky on a mini canvas. When I got home, I used the sky as a background for a Ben Nevis sunset idea I'd been wanting to paint for a while. The painting I ended up doing of the Devil's Ridge captured the fascinating pre-sunrise colours - the first light of dawn, well before any sun touches the tops. A great time to be up high and looking at mountains.
